
Saoirse Ronan is heading for Broadway and will make her New York theatre debut in a new production of Arthur Miller’s classic 1953 drama The Crucible, which is set during the Salem Witch Trials.
The Brooklyn star has been cast opposite Skyfall‘s Ben Whishaw, who is also making his Broadway debut; Game of Thrones actor Ciarán Hinds and Hotel Rwanda‘s Sophie Okonedo.
Ronan will play witch accuser Abigail Williams with Whishaw taking on the role of her older ex-lover John Proctor, US trade publication Variety reports.
Film and TV producer Scott Rudin (The Newsroom, Captain Phillips) is producing the play, which is scheduled for a 20-week run, beginning in February 2016.
Ivo van Hove, whose credits include Hedda Gabler and A Streetcar Named Desire, is directing the latest revival of The Crucible, which won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1953. It was revived in 2002 with a cast featuring Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Jennifer Carpenter and Kristen Bell.
