The nominations for the Oscars will not be announced until January, but Saoirse Ronan has been tipped as a frontrunner for her performance in the upcoming Irish film Brooklyn.
Ronan is joined on US film and television industry website Indiewire’slatest list, The Women to Beat, So Far (First Tier), by Cate Blanchett (Carol), Rooney Mara (Carol), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), Lily Tomlin (Grandma) and Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road).
Directed by John Crowley (Intermission, Boy A) and adapted by Nick Hornby from the Colm Tóibín bestseller, Brooklyn tells the story of Eilis Lacey (Ronan), who leaves 1950s Ireland for New York.
There, she falls in love but later has to choose between her life in the US and her life back home.
Filming took place in Wexford, Dublin and Wicklow and the cast also includes Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Julie Walters and Jim Broadbent.
Brooklyn will be released in Irish cinemas on November 6. The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 14, 2016.
